We campaign for a fair deal for all. We demand free education, public services run for the people, not profit, and a united effort to combat inequality. The recession is being used as an excuse to make vicious cuts in services. This means that after school or graduation many of us could find ourselves without a career or decent employment.
Socialist Students campaigns for all young people to be in employment with good pay and conditions. Apprenticeships should be paid, tuition fees must be scrapped, EMA should be restored and raised so to truly reflect living costs and good quality training with good prospects must be provided for young people.
We hold weekly meetings at Leicester University, every Thursday at 18:00, to discuss issues ranging from education, youth unemployment, the cuts, politics, the history of struggle, economics and much more. We also discuss the way forward in defeating attacks on our standard of living. Our meetings are friendly, welcoming and are open to anyone.
Currently, we are supporting Youth Fight for Jobs in their effort to recreate the historic Jarrow march this October. This march of people affected by the cuts from the North-East will be passing through Leicester. We hope that this, the 75th anniversary of the Jarrow struggle, will demonstrate to people that even 75 years on, Capitalism still denies working people the right to a decent living and only a planned economy that serves the needs of all rather than a select few can succeed in guaranteeing us all a future.
